CLAIM: Nigerian Military Purchase 50 Russian-made Su-30 Fighter Jets

On November 14, 2025, a Facebook user @INews claimed that Nigeria has purchased 50 Russian-made Su-30 fighter jets to bolster its military in preparation for ‘foreign aggression’.

The post had an image of fighter jet and President Bola Tinubu with the caption

“Breaking News: Nigeria has reportedly purchased 50 units of the Russian-made Su-30 fighter jet, a move analysts say signals serious military preparation amid rising global tensions.

According to early intelligence briefings, officials claim the newly acquired Su-30 fleet is “fully ready for any foreign aggression, including an American invasion.” Military insiders added that the jets are equipped with advanced long-range capabilities. One analyst, speaking under anonymity, told our reporters: “The Su-30 is not a toy. With the right configuration, it can strike long-distance targets in record time. This acquisition changes the balance of power in West Africa.” Another source boldly declared: If pushed, these birds can cover impossible distances in minutes. Nigeria is no longer a country you threaten casually.”

VERIFICATION

A fact check of the image in the claim shows that the image is a Sukhoi Su-30 multirole fighter jet. This specific aircraft is the second prototype of the Su-30MKI variant, which served as a demonstrator for the Indian Air Force. The Su-30 is the base aircraft, while the Su-30MKI is a much more advanced, customised variant designed specifically for India.

Su-30 Su-30MKI

In July 2017, The Council on Foreign Relations reported that Nigeria purchased about 12 Su-30 jets from Russia. The report which quoted Russian media sources states that Nigeria had received 2 out of the 12 purchased Su-30 jets. These earlier reports were never fully verified. Some defence analysts later noted that the aircraft mentioned might have been confused with Russian Mi-35 helicopters.

Nigeria's most recent aircraft purchases are Italian-made M-346 fighter-trainer jets, along with helicopters from various suppliers. This purchase was initiated in October 2024. Neither the Nigerian government nor the Nigerian Air Force has announced the purchase of 50 Su-30 jets. The Russian government and major defence manufacturers have also not reported any such deal.

CONCLUSION

The claim that Nigeria purchased 50 Russian Su-30 fighter jets is FALSE. There is no reliable evidence to support it. Available information shows that Nigeria’s current confirmed aircraft acquisitions are not from 2025 and involve other models, not the Su-30s.
