Here’s What We Know About The Reported Attack On Alex Otti’s Convoy

There was a recent claim  about an attack on the convoy of the executive governor of Abia state, Alex Otti. This circulating report about the attack has sparked concerns about the governor’s safety. In this deep dive, NV-A verifies emerging details about the incident.

What Happened

On December 2, 2025, a three-member advance team working for Governor Alex Otti was attacked by unidentified gunmen while travelling along the Umuowa–Ihite axis in Imo State, near the junction leading to Sam Mbakwe Airport.

According to the official statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Ukoha Njoku, the attack did not involve Otti himself, his main convoy was reportedly not on that route at the time. There were no casualties or injuries reported, as the three aides escaped unhurt. The government says security agencies have been notified and investigations have begun to identify and apprehend the assailants.

Why The Confusion

Some news outlets initially described the event as an attack on “Otti’s convoy.” But the clarification from the governor’s spokesman explained that the attack was on an advance team, not on Otti or his main convoy. As of now, the police in Imo State have reportedly not released a formal public statement about the incident.

Who Might Be Behind The Attack?

Recent attacks in parts of the South-East of Nigeria, especially in Imo state, are often attributed by authorities to the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, or associated militant elements. However, there has been no credible public source confirming that IPOB has taken responsibility for this particular attack. The reports describing the attackers simply refer to them as “unidentified gunmen.”

Since the police have yet to confirm or attribute the attack to IPOB directly, it would be  speculative to attribute the incident to the group at this moment.

Conclusion

It is a fact that an advance team attached to Governor Alex Otti was attacked by gunmen on December 2, 2025, in Imo State. No deaths or injuries were recorded, and the governor was not directly involved. However, it is not correct, based on currently available public evidence, to assert definitively that the attack was carried out by IPOB. The attackers remain unidentified and unclaimed.
