VERIFICATION

NV-A conducted a reverse Google image search on the attached images and the result showed that the same images is on Thread, with the caption “Detty December Cut Short As INTERPOL Arrests Nigerian Man At Abuja Airport”, while an online news blog also has the same image with the headline “INTERPOL Arrests Nigerian Businessman at Abuja Airport”.

Ramon Abbas, known as Hushpuppi, was sentenced in November 2022 to 135 months (more than 11 years) in a U.S. federal prison after pleading guilty to money laundering and related fraud conspiracy charges.

To further ascertain Huspuppi’s present whereabouts, NV-A scoured through the inmate register of the US Federal Bureau of Prisons, The register contains the details of inmates including name, age, location and release date.

The register above shows that Ramon was still an inmate at Fort Dix FCI in New Jersey, when this report was published. The prison is a low security federal correctional institution in Burlington, New Jersey.

Vanguard Nigeria reported that Abbas’s behaviour while still in custody after his arrest in July 2021 was discussed in legal filings before his official sentencing. It was appealed that his sentence be commuted to 11 years following his ‘very good’ behaviour while at Central Valley workshop for prisoners.

CONCLUSION

The claim that the convicted internet fraudster, Hushpuppi, has been released from prison in the United States due to good behaviour, and deported back to Nigeria is FALSE. The image in circulation is not Hushpuppi and a look into the US Federal Bureau of Prisons’ register shows that he is still in custody.
