Is The U.S. Sending An Additional 200 Troops To Protect Nigerian Christian?

On February 11, 2026, a Facebook blog, Zamani’s Blog, claimed that President Donald Trump will be sending an additional 200 U.S soldiers to Nigeria, to protect Christians, by fighting Islamic insurgents. The post, which has collaged images of Trump, Nigerian military formation and their American counterpart, is captioned, “Breaking News 😳😳🚨🚨🚨 America is sending an extra 200 soldiers to Nigeria to fight Islamic terrorists in Nigeria 🇳🇬 and protect Christians . As we speak , they are on their way to Nigeria 🇳🇬. Trump made it clear that Christians in Nigeria and all over the world MUST BE protected . Moral lesson : We just hope Sheik Gummi is happy”

When this report was published, the post had over 2,280 reactions, comments and shares.

VERIFICATION

NV-A conducted a reverse Google image search on the two different military formations. The results found that the image of the Nigerian troops was captured in November 2025, during a tour of the Theatre Command Operation Lafiya Dole by Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff at Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria. While the other image is from 2017, showing U.S. soldiers in Georgia.

In mid-February 2026, the United States dispatched about 100 troops to Nigeria. These personnel are to  provide technical and intelligence support to the Nigerian military in its fight against Islamic militant groups, not to lead combat operations.

Reports suggest the U.S. intends to increase that number to around 200 troops eventually, but this deployment is described by official sources as focused on training and support, not active frontline combat.

While some U.S. political figures have framed militant violence in Nigeria as predominantly targeting Christians, the Nigerian government has rejected the characterisation of the violence as primarily religious genocide.

It is important to note that the U.S. conducted airstrikes in Nigeria in late December 2025 against Islamic State–linked militant targets at the request of Nigerian authorities, not an independent intervention.

Nevertheless, there is no evidence that the U.S. is deploying combat troops to directly engage militants, secure Christians or take over fighting duties from Nigerian forces.

CONCLUSION

The claim that the U.S. intends sending an additional 200 U.S soldiers to Nigeria, to protect Christians, by fighting Islamic insurgents, is MISLEADING. Findings show that though the U.S. has sent 100 soldiers and plans to increase the number, this deployment is focused on training and support, not taking over active frontline combat from the Nigerian army.
