Did Mozambique Block Trucks Heading To South Africa?

On June 1, 2026, a Facebook page, Buzz Africa, claimed that Mozambique blocked over 500 trucks heading to South Africa, from crossing through its border. The post, which has collage pictures of Daniel Chapo, Mozambique’s president, Mozambique’s flag and some trucks, is seen below.

When this report was published, the post had over 777 reactions, comments and shares.

VERIFICATION

NV-A conducted keyword searches and it found Facebook and X posts of the same claim that Mozambique stopped more than 5,000 South African trucks from crossing its borders. However, these posts largely cite one another and do not provide official documents, government statements, or verifiable transport data supporting the figure.

There are reports that disruptions have occurred along the Mozambique–South Africa transport corridor, particularly around the Lebombo–Ressano Garcia border crossing, where truck queues and temporary restrictions have been reported. The report indicated that truck movements were affected by protests, political unrest, and security concerns near key trade routes linking the two countries, attributing the disruptions to broader political tensions.

Meanwhile, reports from South African media and border authorities have previously documented long truck queues and temporary border-management measures during periods of unrest, but these do not substantiate the specific claim that Mozambique has blocked 5,000 South African trucks.

The Road Freight Association chairperson, Gavin Kelly, has said that South Africa’s border posts with Mozambique are operating normally, with no disruptions reported by transport bodies. Similarly, the Federation of East and Southern African Road Transport Associations (Fesarta) notes that there had been no incidents as highlighted in the warning. “We have told drivers to be vigilant and at this stage the roads are all clear,” says executive director, Mike Fitzmaurice.

CONCLUSION

The claim that Mozambique blocked over 500 trucks from gaining entrance into South Africa, is MISLEADING. There have been documented long truck queues and temporary border management measures during recent periods of unrest, but there is no credible evidence from official Mozambican or South African authorities confirming that Mozambique deliberately blocked over 5,000 South African trucks.
