The Ghana–South Korea Visa Waiver Agreement

The Ghana–South Korea Visa Waiver Agreement

On June 1, 2026, Ghana and South Korea signed a historic visa waiver agreement during the Korea–Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Seoul. The agreement was signed by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and his South Korean counterpart, Cho Hyun. It represents the first visa waiver arrangement between the two countries since the establishment of diplomatic relations nearly 50 years ago.

What Does The Agreement Mean?

The agreement allows holders of diplomatic and service (official) passports from both Ghana and South Korea to travel between the two countries without obtaining a visa beforehand. The primary aim is to facilitate official government travel, diplomatic engagements, and bilateral cooperation.

In practical terms, government officials, diplomats, and certain public servants traveling on official assignments will benefit from simplified travel procedures once the agreement takes effect.

Does The Agreement Apply To Ordinary Passport Holders?

At present, the visa waiver agreement does not apply to ordinary passport holders. Ghanaian citizens traveling to South Korea on regular passports and South Korean citizens traveling to Ghana on regular passports must still comply with existing visa requirements.

This distinction is important because some social media posts have incorrectly suggested that all citizens of both countries can now travel visa-free.

Are There Plans To Extend The Arrangement?

Following the signing ceremony, Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced that negotiations would continue with the objective of extending visa-free travel to holders of ordinary passports. However, no agreement has yet been reached on this broader arrangement. If future negotiations are successful, ordinary travelers, tourists, businesspeople, and students could eventually benefit from easier travel between the two countries. However, such changes would require a separate agreement and official implementation process.

Conclusion

The Ghana–South Korea visa waiver agreement is a diplomatic milestone that removes visa requirements for holders of diplomatic and service passports. While it does not yet grant visa-free travel to ordinary citizens, it signals a deepening relationship between the two countries and could pave the way for broader travel facilitation in the future. For now, ordinary passport holders must continue to follow existing visa procedures.
