VERIFICATION
According to reports from NASA, 97% of actively publishing climate scientists agree that global warming is real and largely caused by humans through greenhouse gas emissions.
Reports published on Climate.gov, highlights that “farmers in some regions may benefit from the earlier onset of spring and from a longer warm season that is suitable for growing crops.” The report further notes that while some modest, limited benefits of warmer temperatures have been discussed, the overall scientific assessment is that the risks and harms from global warming far outweigh the potential benefits.
The article, ‘Are there positive benefits from global warming?’, published by Climate.gov, found that “crops and other plants grow better in the presence of higher carbon dioxide levels and seem to be more drought-tolerant. But this benefit is a two-edged sword: weeds, many invasive plant species, and insect pests will also thrive in a warmer world. Water availability will be impacted in drier agricultural areas that need irrigation.”
Columbia Climate School’s ‘State of the Planet’ news blog published an article asserting that “Higher temperatures and an increase in moisture also make crops more vulnerable. Weeds, many of which thrive in heat and elevated CO2, already cause about 34 percent of crop losses; insects cause 18 percent of losses, and disease 16 percent. Climate change will likely magnify these losses.”
NASA in its research report stated that the changes to weather and ecosystems will affect people more directly. Hardest hit will be those living in low-lying coastal areas, and residents of poorer countries who do not have the resources to adapt to changes in temperature extremes and water resources. As tropical temperature zones expand, the reach of some infectious diseases, such as malaria, will change. More intense rains and hurricanes and rising sea levels will lead to more severe flooding and potential loss of property and life.
CONCLUSION
The claim about global warming being beneficial is MISLEADING. It is technically true that some narrow benefits are possible in particular places or for specific aspects like longer growing seasons but the scientific evidence shows that the net effects of global warming are overwhelmingly harmful, with serious risks to human health, ecosystems, and economies.
