CLAIM: Russia Offers Nuclear Weapons To South Africa

On February 20, 2026, an X user @Africanhub made a claim that Russia has offered nuclear weapons to South Africa, if it continues the case against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli officials at the International Criminal Court, ICC, and the International Court of Justice, ICJ. The post had a mixed image of President Putin, Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources of South Africa Gwede Mantashe and a nuclear weapon, with the caption “JUST IN: Russia offers Nukes to South Africa if it continues ICC and ICJ genocidal case against Netanyahu and Israeli officials.”

When this report was published, this claim had about 74,700 views and over 2,264 replies, reposts, quotes, likes, and bookmarks.

VERIFICATION

Russia and South Africa maintain cordial diplomatic relations that date back to the Soviet Union’s support for the anti apartheid struggle. Today, both countries cooperate in several areas including trade, energy, defence dialogue, and multilateral platforms. They are also members of the BRICS alongside Brazil, India, and China, where they collaborate on economic and geopolitical issues. Despite these close diplomatic ties, there is no evidence that their relationship involves nuclear weapons transfers.

There is no official statement from the Russian government confirming that it made such an offer to South Africa. Likewise, the South African government has not announced receiving or considering any proposal involving nuclear weapons from Russia. And there are no credible reports that Russia offered nuclear arms to South Africa.

South Africa is a signatory to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and is internationally recognised as a country that voluntarily dismantled its nuclear weapons programme in the early 1990s. Under the treaty, nuclear weapon states are prohibited from transferring nuclear weapons to non nuclear states, while non nuclear states are prohibited from acquiring them. Therefore any arrangement with Russia would violate international nuclear non proliferation agreements.

CONCLUSION

The claim that Russia offered nuclear weapons to South Africa in exchange for continuing legal cases against Israeli officials at the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice is FALSE. There is no evidence from official government statements, or credible reports to support the allegation. Furthermore, such an action would violate international nuclear non proliferation laws to which South Africa is a signatory.
