What Really Happened In Burundi?

On the evening of March 31, 2026 reports indicate that explosions were heard in parts of Bujumbura, linked to an incident at or near a military installation. The scale of the explosions was dramatic, and the chaos on the streets empty buses, fleeing pedestrians, police vehicles moving in multiple directions

A projectile from the depot landed near the building housing the national radio broadcaster, a detail that stoked coup fears given Burundi’s political history. Seizing the national broadcaster is traditionally one of the first moves in a coup attempt in many African countries, and Burundians are acutely aware of this.

In a statement, the Burundian army spokesman, Gaspard Baratuza, attributed the explosions to “a serious electrical accident in the ammunition store of the FDNB (Burundi National Defence Force) based in Musaga,” and urged the public to remain calm and avoid the surrounding area.

When Was The Last  Coup In Burundi?

The last coup attempt in Burundi was in May 2015. Major General Godefroid Niyombare, a former intelligence chief, announced that President Pierre Nkurunziza had been relieved of his duties, triggering fierce fighting in the capital between his forces and those loyal to the president. The move came while Nkurunziza was in Tanzania to meet with regional leaders about the political crisis.

However, the takeover attempt failed after nearly 36 hours of chaos and tension, in which a military force divided between those loyal to Nkurunziza and soldiers supporting his ouster battled for control of the capital’s airport and media assets, Niyombare was forced to concede that his coup had failed

For the events of March 31, 2026, no general came forward to announce the removal of President Évariste Ndayishimiye. No coup declaration was broadcast. No rival military factions were reported fighting for control of government assets. The army itself, typically the actor in any coup, was the institution reassuring the public that what had occurred was an accident.

There is no verified evidence of a coup attempt.

CONCLUSION

While real and frightening explosions did rock Bujumbura on the evening of March 31, 2026, both the Burundian army and the Ministry of the Interior confirmed these were caused by an accidental electrical fire at a military ammunition depot in the Musaga district. No coup declaration was made, no government was overthrown.
