Has Mali Purchased Russian-Made Orion Drones?
On June 8, 2026, an X user @cecild84 claimed that Mali has successfully acquired Russian-made Orion combat drones. The post had image of drones with the caption, “🇲🇱 Mali has successfully obtained Russian made Orion drones.”

VERIFICATION
Orion, known in Russian service as Inokhodets (“Pacer”), is Russia’s first operational Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). It was developed by the Russian defense company Kronshtadt Group to perform intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and precision-strike missions. The export version is marketed as Orion-E.
Mali has significantly expanded its drone capabilities in recent years. Reports confirm that the Malian Armed Forces acquired Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 drones and later received Akinci combat drones from TĂĽrkiye as part of efforts to strengthen counterinsurgency operations.
Reports also confirm that Russia has supplied Mali with various military assets, including helicopters, armoured vehicles, ammunition, and other equipment. Recent reports also indicate the presence of Russian-made loitering munitions and Shahed-type drones in Mali.
There is no credible report or evidence that Mali has received or is in the process of receiving Orion-E drones. The first confirmed Orion-E export went to Ethiopia in early 2026, and the first confirmed African deployment of the Orion-E outside Russia was Algeria, confirmed operationally during the Ouragan 2026 drill in April 2026.
A reverse image search conducted using Google Lens revealed that the image had appeared online approximately five years ago. The image was used in reports concerning Russia’s Kronshtadt company, the manufacturer of the Orion-E drone, while another report published in early January focused on Russia’s continued production of drones despite sanctions imposed by NATO and Western countries.
CONCLUSION
The claim that Mali has successfully acquired Russian-made Orion combat drones is FALSE. While Mali maintains close military relations with Russia and has received various Russian military assets, there is currently no verified evidence that the country has obtained Russian-made Orion drones.
